Everything worth knowing before you choose a chew. If your question isn't here, message us — we answer every one.
How do I choose the right chew for my dog?
Start with your dog, not the product. Three things decide it: their size, how they chew, and what you want the chew to do.
Size is the simplest. A chew should be big enough that your dog can't get the whole thing into their mouth, and small enough that they can actually work on it.
Chewing style matters more than most people expect. Some dogs gnaw and scrape patiently for an hour. Others try to crush everything in three bites. A patient chewer does well with a dense, long-lasting chew. A crusher needs something that gives way rather than something that resists.
Then purpose. A chew meant to keep a bored dog occupied for an hour is a different product from one meant to support dental care in a senior dog, or a small daily reward during training.
Not sure where your dog fits? Message us with their weight and how they normally attack a chew, and we'll tell you which of ours suits. We would rather talk you into the right product than sell you the wrong one.
Are hard chews suitable for every dog?
No, and we'd rather say so plainly.
Hard chews suit dogs who gnaw and scrape — dogs who settle in and work at something over time. For those dogs, a durable chew delivers exactly what it promises: sustained chewing, mental stimulation, and a satisfying job to do.
They are not right for dogs who try to crush everything they're given. A dog who applies full bite force to a hard object is the dog most at risk of a fractured tooth, and that risk is real regardless of which chew or which brand. They're also not right for puppies with developing teeth, for senior dogs with worn teeth, or for any dog with known dental problems.
This is why we don't sell one chew and tell everyone it's perfect. We carry softer options alongside harder ones because dogs genuinely differ, and the right answer depends on the dog in front of you.
If you've watched your dog crack through something they shouldn't have, believe them. Choose a softer chew and supervise every session.
Are yak chews too hard for dogs?
It depends on the dog, and the way a yak chew works is worth understanding.
A dry chhurpi chew is firm when it comes out of the packet. But it doesn't stay that way in use. As your dog works on it, saliva softens the outer layer, and the chew is scraped away gradually rather than cracked apart. It wears down over time instead of failing all at once — which is a different mechanism from a bone or antler, where the object stays rigid until something gives.
That gradual wearing is exactly what makes it a good chew for a patient gnawer. It's also why it isn't suitable for a dog who tries to crush everything. A dog applying full bite force to a firm object isn't scraping it down, and that's where the risk sits.
Yak chews also aren't for puppies, senior dogs with worn teeth, or any dog with known dental problems.
Two practical rules for the dogs they do suit: supervise chewing, and take the chew away once it wears down to a piece small enough to swallow whole.
Are WagglyCove chews safe for puppies and senior dogs?
Some are, some aren't, and choosing well matters more for these two groups than for any other.
Puppies and seniors usually aren't chewing for the same reason an energetic adult dog is. For them it's less about burning energy for an hour and more about gentle dental support and something enjoyable to work on. So the chew has to do that job without putting their teeth at risk — developing teeth in one case, worn or fragile teeth in the other.
That means softer, more pliable chews. Our GentleCare stick is made specifically for this. Our harder chews — yak chews, bone marrow, goat horn — are built for strong adult chewers and aren't suitable here.
If your senior dog has any known dental problems, ask your vet before introducing a new chew. They'd rather you asked.
Where are WagglyCove treats sourced from?
We source from wherever the best version of a product is genuinely made, not from wherever is cheapest.
Our yak chews come from the Himalayas, where the chhurpi tradition has been refined over generations and the process is done properly. Several of our air-dried treats come from Australia, China and United States. We also work with trusted local producers in Malaysia for selected air-dried products.
We choose suppliers who take hygiene and food safety seriously, and we don't move forward with anyone whose standards we're not comfortable with. From there we test what they send — ingredients, hardness, size, and whether it honestly delivers the benefit it claims.
We don't have a preferred country. We have a preferred standard, and it applies the same way everywhere.
What makes WagglyCove different from other dog treats?
We've trialled more than 50 products to end up with the 30 we sell. More than a third of what we test never reaches you.
Here's the process behind that number. It starts with the supplier — we only work with producers whose standards satisfy us. Then we check the product itself against ingredients, hardness, size and function. Then Haru — our Shiba Inu, and the reason WagglyCove exists — tries it. He has tested every chew we sell, and at eight years old he remains a difficult customer. If it gets past him, we send samples to long-time customers and ask them for the truth. If the feedback doesn't hold up, the product doesn't launch.
It also means we say no to things people ask us for. We've turned down products because they were harder than we were comfortable with, and we'd rather carry fewer chews we believe in than a full shelf we don't.
Do dog chews really help with dental health?
Chewing creates friction against the tooth surface, and that mechanical action can help reduce plaque buildup as part of a wider dental routine. The effect comes from texture and chewing time, not from any ingredient.
Two honest caveats. Chews support dental care but do not replace it — brushing and professional cleaning still matter, and no chew changes that. And harder is not better: a chew hard enough to fracture a tooth causes far more dental damage than plaque ever would.
What works is a chew your dog will actually work on for a sustained period, at a hardness their teeth can handle. That's what we select for.
